While I was browsing through some articles about ancient art, I stumbled upon this romantic tale of two ancient Egyptian figurines. Depicting a husband and wife, the small statues were separated thousands of years ago- probably intentionally. The fragment of the wife shows a seated woman with her arm outstretched.
Apparently, the style is traditional in Egyptian art, signifying both the physical and spiritual bonds between a married couple. The face of the female figurine was ruined and the pair were separated; an act believed to be deliberate. Experts suggest it was the doing of a jealous lover, second wife, an angry child or possibly just thoughtless vandalism.
The two pieces are to be brought together this month at the 10th Annual Brussels Ancient Art Fair. I can’t wait to go! And Nina might just come- she loves this kind of mysterious, ancient romance.
